Why Does Your Commercial Roof Need a Access Hatch

Access hatches are rare on residential roofs. Why, then, do you need one for a commercial roof? Commercial buildings have stricter building codes and require regular inspections. This includes roof maintenance. A commercial roof access hatch allows inspectors and other personnel to gain easy and secure access.

Considerations for Access Hatch

The first step is to decide on a size for your hatch. Is the hatch intended to be used as an access point for staff? Do you need a bigger opening to transport large equipment? The latter is more common in warehouses and manufacturing plants, particularly when installing HVAC equipment or generators.

Also, a hatch requires a ladder or steps. A fixed ladder is sufficient for smaller hatches with a single cover. Ship stairs may be recommended for larger hatches or to transport heavy equipment.

Access Hatches

There are many styles and types of hatches. These are the hatch types that we use for Mukilteo facilities.

Steel Roof Hatch

This basic hatch is made of heavy-duty steel. To withstand extreme weather conditions, it is coated with a rust-resistant coating.

Aluminum Floor Hatches

Another sturdy option is this. This hatch often has a diamond-plated exterior door that can withstand the foot traffic of utility workers. The hatch may be enhanced by noise-control padding.

Recessed floor hatch

This allows the installers to place a piece of flooring on top of the door, matching the floor. This includes all common flooring materials such as concrete, stone, or tile.
